Sensor Web Community

52°North's Sensor Web community focuses on the development of a broad range of services and encoding implementations related to Sensor Web) research.

The community is intensively involved in the standardization process of the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC), which will ensure a sustainable development. OGC's Sensor Web Enablement (SWE) initiative aims at standardizing the entire sensor web process: description of sensors and the setup of sensor and measurement registries, discovery and sensor tasking mechanisms, and access of data observed by sensors. A comprehensive introduction into the architectural background of the OGC SWE framework can be found here. A profound survey article which describes the current state of the art of SWE technology, web services and data encodings, can be found at the open access journal sensors.

52°North accelerates the entire process of setting up interoperable sensor webs by bundling developer capacities. Currently, we are developing five different SWE web services and multiple client applications to. Please have a look at the Demo page to get an idea of what our components can do.

A strong partner of this community is the Sensor Web, Web-based Geoprocessing, and Simulation Lab (SWSL) at the Institute for Geoinformatics (ifgi). The researchers of this group which is part of the University of Muenster contribute much of their work to the 52°North open source initiative to ensure a wide distribution of their work and profit from the partner network and dissemination activities.

Also, the community is involved in the Sensor Web Alliance, a virtual sensor web research collaboration platform. Sensor Web Alliance members address distinct parts of Sensor Web development and research.

Service Projects

  • SOS (Sensor Observation Service): provides access to sensor information (SensorML) and measured sensor observations (O&M)
  • SAS (Sensor Alert Service): enables real-time alerting using a pub/sub paradigm
  • SES (Sensor Event Service): an enhancement and the further development of the SAS.
  • SPS (Sensor Planning Service): tasks sensors or sensor systems
  • WNS (Web Notification Service): supports asynchronous notification of sensor events (tasks, observation of phenomena)

SWE Client Projects

  • OX-Framework software framework which enables easy usage of SWE services and data encodings
  • Rich OX Client Java-Swing frontend for the OX-Framework which allows access to SOS, SAS, SES and SPS
  • Sensor Web Client web-based client allowing the visualisation of near-realtime sensor data
  • ArcGIS SOS Extension this extension for the widely used ArcGIS software enables the usage of the SOS
  • uDig SOS Plugin an SOS plugin for the open source desktop GIS uDIG
  • OX WMS based on the OX-Framework, this server application conforms to OGC's WMS standard and acts as a proxy to an SOS by providing map layers of rendered sensor data.
  • OX RESTFul SOS based on the OX-Framework, this server application provides a RESTful SOS proxy to Sensor Observation Services.
  • sos4R an extension for the R environment for statistical computing and analysis to access Sensor Observation Services

Incubator Projects

  • Sensor Discovery - services interfaces for discovering sensors and SWE service instances
  • Sensor World - a simultaion environment for sensors and phenomenon distribution
  • Sensor Bus - an intermediary layer for an easy integration of sensors and the Sensor Web
  • SIDs (Sensor Interface Descriptors): describe the interface of your sensor and easily integrate it with the Sensor Web
  • ifgicopter - software components for unmanned aerials vehicles
